Food Science Distance Education Program

Interested in increasing your knowledge of food science?

If so, tap into the distance education programs available through Kansas State University's Food Science Program and Division of Continuing Education.  The Institute of Food Technologists recently recognized K-State as "having the most comprehensive food science distance education program in the United States".  In addition, K-State's Division of Continuing Education has won national awards in distance education innovation.

Distance education allows students to pursue additional degrees or training without disrupting employment or family life.  With few exceptions, students do not have to travel to the K-State campus to participate in courses or training programs.

Distance education courses are delivered through a variety of methods including the Web, videotapes, LISTSERVS, chat room discussions, e-mail, CD-ROMs, audiotapes, and guided study.  Students will need an e-mail address and access to the web to participate in most courses and programs.

Is Distance Education a Good Match for Me?

Distance education requires students to be self-disciplined and willing to devote free time to taking courses.  An advantage to distance education is that students are able to select their schedules for studying and completing assignments.  The flexibility of distance education makes it an attractive option for working professionals.

Student Earns Bachelor's Degree Online

The food science industry can be demanding. For young professionals, getting ahead may mean going back to school, and that's just what Nathan Smit did through Kansas State University's online bachelor's degree in food science.

Since earning his degree, Smit has been promoted from senior research and development technician to associate food scientist in the product and process development section of Hormel Foods. He also has three patents pending on food products and processes he has developed since then.

"Completing my degree has inspired other employees to go back to school. Sometimes people I don't even know approach me and ask for information on Kansas State," Smit said. "It's motivation for them because I rose up from humble beginnings to become an associate scientist. And I tell them that any online program at K-State is going to be one of the best there is
.

Congratulations Nathan!
