Kansas State University Food Science students have been winners of many scholarships from the university and other food science organizations.  We are proud of their outstanding achievements and congratulate them on being winners of many prestigious awards.  Here are some of the winners.

National Awards        

aacc2009Congratulations to Melissa Daniel, graduate student in meat science and Angela Dodd, graduate student in food science for being selected as winners of the 2009 International American Association of Cereal Chemists Product Development competition, September 13-16 in Baltimore, MD.  Their product was Gluten-Free Fun Flavored Waffle Cone mix.  They created two flavors, cinnamon and vanilla.  The first place prize was $2,500.  Congratulations!

 

 

 

 

 


Congratulations to Sean Finnie, graduate student in Grain Science, for winning first place at the American Association of Cereal Chemists 2009 Best Student Research Paper Competition.  Sean won a $1,000 cash award, a $300 travel grant, and the opportunity to publish his paper in Cereal Chemistry, CEREAL FOODS WORLD, or the Cereal Science Knowledge Database.


Kathryn and ElyseCongratulations to Elyse Buckley and Kathryn Goddard for being selected as the winners in the Walt Disney Food Product Development competition held at the Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting, June 6-9 in Anaheim, CA,  Their product is called "Peelables".  It is a fruit and vegetable leather rich in anti-oxidant vitamins and calcium. They are in the form of Disney character shapes with hidden educational messages.  The grand prize was $2,500 and a VIP tour of Disneyland.  Congratulations!

 

 

 


Congratulations to the 2009 K-State Quiz Bowl team who competed in the Institute of Food Technologists Quiz Bowl competition on April 2, 2009.  They received a second place finish!  Team members include Tess Ludwick, Amanda Mentzer, Erin Harbacek, Vaibhav Ahirrao, Tori Boomgaarden, and Kanithaporn Puangsombat.  Way to go!

Congratulations to Elyse Buckley, Erin Harbacek, and Kathryn Goddard who received first runner-up for their Almond Beer-Battered Catfish product in the Almond Board of California "Ultimate Snack-off Recipe Contest".  Contestants were challenged to create almond-centric snack food ideas to satisfy a man's "game day" appetite.  The K-State winning team will have their recipe published in cookbook from the Almond Board.  Read more...

Congratulations to Kathyrn Krusemark and Kathryn Marston who received first place in the 2008 American Association of Cereal Chemists product development competition held in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The winning duo won $3,000 for their entry, Fretzels, a whole grain soft pretzel with an exotic fruit filling.  Their advisors are Dr. Fadi Aramouni and Dr. Kelly Getty.  Read more...

National Scholarships        

Elyse Buckley2009-2010 AACC International Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship

Elyse Buckley, undergraduate in Food Science, received a $2,000 scholarship from the AACC International Foundation for the 2009-2010 academic year.  This award is for students majoring in a program of courses and/or participating in research that would normally lead to a career in cereal chemistry and technology or were to have taken available courses and otherwise demonstrate interest in such a career.  Congratulations Elyse!

2009-2010 Kellogg's Undergraduate Scholarship

In May 2009, two food science students received $2,000 scholarships from Kellogg’s. The undergraduate scholarship was awarded to Julie Chelewski. She transferred to K-State in fall 2008 after receiving her associate’s degree in Colorado.


Christie Ledeker, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware, received the graduate scholarship. She will be working in the Sensory Analysis Center under the direction of Delores Chambers.

 

Institute of Food Technologists Scholarships        

2009-2010 IFT Foundation Scholarships

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) announced their 2009-2010 Foundation Scholarship winners. Kansas State University ranked second in the number of scholarships awarded with 10. Food Science Students submitted 16 applications (9 current students and 7 incoming Freshman) for IFT Foundation Scholarships. Below is the list of KSU Students receiving scholarships.

Gamma Sigma Delta
